I actually think that the Government's overall response is the best in the current geopolitical and economic circumstances. Therefore I don't intend to support your campaign on this occasion.

It is a pity Graeme did not support his opinion with any reason or fact that could be of positive input to the 'debate'.

I hold a counter-opinion to graeme for the following reasons:

i desire a future Australia that still has a thriving tourism industry around the Great Barrier and Ningaloo Reefs which are in danger of being lost forever because of our unwillingness to demand constructive actions be taken immediately that are already 'overdue' according to a majority of intelligent, informed 'opinions' that consider facts and observable long-term trends.

As an advanced first world country entering the 21st century we should be doing ALL that is humanly possible to lead the rest of the world AWAY from a 19th century form of power generation, burning a non-renewable but plentiful (and very very profitable for a small, powerful, fearful few) energy source in Coal to produce steam by boiling water!

The future is about clean and renewable energy sources that used in co-operation are more than capable of supplying the world's energy needs many times over with existing, let alone 'new,' unproven technologies.

Also the 'current' economic situation is a VERY SHORT TERM thing and should not be used to justify selling out the human population's long term survival. By 2020 the economic cycle will no doubt have swung back and our CO2 production would be almost unchanged if this policy is allowed to rule our action for the next ten years.

We should be making sure of our economic futures by developing these new indistries to create jobs that will be sustainable long after coal (and Uranium) has been resigned to it's rightful place on the scrap heap.

1: Kevin Rudd was caught between a rock and a hard place.
What he did was the best plan, given the need for action, but the existing entrenched "cost of change".
2: I hear a lot of wingeing.... What would those people have him do??
GETUP is at risk of losing the support of real Australians. Please be relevant.

I AM INCENSED BY THE PROBABILITY THAT TAX-PAYERS' MONEY IS AGAIN BEING WASTED IN FUNDING A CAMPAIGN TO CON THE ELECTORATE INTO BELIEVING THE AUSTRALIAN MEASURES SUGGESTED AS REMEDIES FOR CLIMATE ARE ADEQUATE.
ON 24TH NOVEMBER 2007 THE MAJORITY OF AUSTRALIANS SHOWED THAT THEY DO NOT BELIEVE IN SUCH PROPAGANDA-METHODS WHILST SIMULTANEOUSLY BELIEVING THAT CLIMATE-CHANGE IS A DIRE THREAT TO LIFE, LET ALONE LIFE-STYLES.
THIS 'NEW' GOVERNMENT IS STILL HELL-BENT ON LISTENING TO THOSE WHO HAVE HAD A CENTURY OF 'GOOD-TIMES' PROFITING FROM & POLLUTING WHILST USING FOSSIL-FUELS.
THE RUDD GOVERNMENT HAS MATCHED CREATED TARGETS TO PACIFY FOSSIL-FUEL DEPENDENT INDUSTRIES. THESE PATHETIC TARGETS WON'T BEGIN TO SATISFY VOTERS, SCIENTISTS & ANY OTHERS WHO KNOW BETTER. GO GET-UP!!!!

ouch. caps lock hurts my eyes.

To claim that KRudd was elected with a mandate for anything is a bit rich considering there was only a couple of percent difference between the two parties. You surely can't assume all voters voted for exactly the same reasons????
The same as you surely can't assume that tearing billions of dollars and thousands of jobs out of the economy is going to change anything. Australia contributes about 1% of world emissions so how will the reef et al be saved if we reduce our emissions by even 100%? All intelligent, educated or even those not so bright can do the simple math to see it makes no difference.
There is evidence to suggest that there has been no warming for a decade now and this "catastrophe" in the making has the same ring as "global cooling" that was being hailed as armageddon not too long ago, probably by the same self serving fear mongerers as today.

GetUp started off well by aiming to protect Australians but i fear it has fallen for the same hogwash that a lot of other unfortunate, misplaced people/institutions have succumbed to.

"There is evidence to suggest that there has been no warming for a decade now."
Not true

Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is
now evident from observations of increases in global
average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting
of snow and ice and rising global average sea level

Can’t believe that people are so bloody naïve, you still believe what you’re told by the pollies, and they will do what they have to do regardless of your wishes. Howard was not going to rush into the argument, he new this was not going to be an easy task to cut emissions and protect you stupid people.
If we stopped burning coal and turned to nuclear, we could cut emissions in a very short time, but we are still in the dark ages here

The earth has been going through changes over the last 3 bill years, ice age has happened before get your little brains around it that the earth is dying just like you and I, we are only microbes (mind you we have a few Billion years left).

The answer and steps to take….
1 Get rid of the shackles of religion of all types, replace with one common acceptable type ( if you need some sort of crutch).
2 Once we have done the above then set about controlling the population.
3 Next we can then control the food chain and supply’s around the world.
4 once all these things are in place then we control the environment and start to really look after our planet.
Recession………..
You know if we don’t go into recession, it wont be rudds doing, it was little J and P that put the money into the coppers so rudd could use it, imagine if we had a deficit and not a surplus at this time.

I also feel sorry for all those that fixed their home loan early this year, One of the first things rudd said when he got into office “ we wont be spending money like the other mob we will be more conservative (tax promises the Costello was going to give) and then after xmas he went on about inflation rate going through the roof and up went the interest rates (twice) so what did the young ones do but fix them, I’m sorry for the Lib voters, but you rudd votes got the government that you deserve, so don’t blame the banks.

Mr crudd has not made any hard decisions yet, he might lose a vote, can someone please tell him that he won the election, and his team don’t need to continue putting the other side down and he can stop buying votes with my money.

For those who are interested, I have created a Livejournal community called 'Kevin Rudd Climate Criminal' with the new 'interest' of the same name.

The goal of this is to create awareness of the 5% emissions target being an embarrassement and to raise discussion of the issue and create action to encourage the government to step up its offer.

The community is located at http://community.livejournal.com/krudd_criminal/profile

The Australian Government is in a very tight position at the moment, and unfortunately will not be able to act upon the Global Warming crisis as well as we would hope. Although we can certainly continue to discuss how Australia should go about reducing pollution, our economy is not in a good position to allow the Australian Government to take the necessary action within Australia, to meet the global recommendations set by scientists. I understand that we are discussing the problem long-term, but unless we have a crystal ball that will tell us how well our economy holds up in the future, Kevin Rudd will need to "play it safe" with taxpayers money, and so can't make solid monetary contributions until things start looking up.

Also, the carbon pollution that our country contributes every year, is apparently far less than some other developed countries (China being the main one). In my opinion, what we should be doing is focusing more on the pollution being created in other countries like China. Granted, the populations of these other countries are also far greater than Australia's 21.5 million, which is why this particular issue needs to be tackled on an international scale.

Oh, and I believe that we ARE going into a deficit...

I am very much in favour of action to encourage Rudd to take a stronger stand on climate change but I just look at your TV ad and can't see that it will help in any way. What is its message?? Surely you can do better than that? I would willingly support you financially with if you were presenting a stronger, more obvious message.

Hi ,

<< cricket ratings are going through the roof. Help put our ad on air

when the whole nation will be watching. >>

When people are under a Hypnotic state ( trance , high emotion ..) they are more prone to be brainwashed !(adds )
Psychopaths do nor ear opposite arguments..That is why you(Getup ) do not answer to reasonable facts presented to you

I am for a mandatory manufacture of electric cars and for a full exploitation of solar and other alternative energies (EXCEPT ATOMIC )
BECAUSE IT IS REASONABLE ! not because I am scared of a global warming SCAM

There is no need for carbon tax, Just the right uncorrupted policies from the people paid to manage the country .
Has any of your smart brains calculated how much extra CO2 is propelled in the atmosphere from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq ? while we are supposed to feel guilty for using our COMPULSORY petrol car ?

Now if I do not get an answer it just confirm the claim on the Psychopaths.

Hi Getup, not that you would listen to an informed majority, pls see attached (by email).

CON-servation is simply serving the CON that is propogated by media & banksters. More revenue, more hindrance to living life in abundance (notice I did not say wastefully, nor without responsibility).

Personal responsibility is tantamount & cannot be forced on the populace.
No doubt the agenda is being played out to whatever end is required by the hegelian dialectic.
All the global warming scam does is open more eyes to the lies.
Shutting down our industry to conform to a % of emission or CO2 is ridiculous & will only allow the acceleration of the Asian Union (my opinion) as our neighbours will continue to ignore environmental stewardship for profit, leaving us in their poisonous dust. It will also destroy what little manufacturing we have. As if the squandering & sell-off of our common-wealth has not been assiduously planned & executed over the past 3 decades, further decimation will bring in the banksters to take over companies that cannot pay this NEW TAX.

Lastly, what is "CARBON POLLUTION"
If it's carbon dioxide, do you realise that gas is HEAVIER than AIR, hence most of it stays near the ground & gets absorbed by the vegetation of the earth, with the Oxygen & carbon being utilised to allow growth of the LUNGS OF THE PLANET-our forests!!! Hence wouldn't it make sense to NOT CUT DOWN FORESTS, rather than focus on this MYTHICAL CARBON EMISSION, which most people would not understand. All they see are images of steam being pumped into the air via stacks & they think it magically floats into the atmosphere.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MAJOR FLAWS IN GREENHOUSE/CARBON EMISSION SCAMS propogated by the media.

Anyway, enough said.

Here, here!! to most responses. Problem is, maybe 11 make a comment but only a few hundred will read them. Still a long way to go. Not necessarily in order:

1. Non-polluting travel is a a key (see watercars, electric cars etc)-why not fund the car companies with R&D into this (by the way its already available) rather than bailing them our of an imaginary financila mess of the banlsters doing.
2. Sustainable & responsible growth of forests & use of farming land. Allowing the land to rest every 7yrs, rather than pumping it with empty NPK fertiliser & insecticides that poison our food & water supply.
3. Sustain our water resources. Many great ideas here.
4. Build on alternative non-polluting energy. eg cosmic, magnetic, water-tech, electrical-via wind, solar etc.

All this is available but not done. Why?
Simple-banksters & fuel company monopolies of these technologies. If the oil is really dwindling, why not shift to new clean technology? BTW oil is renewable-it comes from magma of the earth-do your own research.
Don't tell me you believe dinosaurs & vegetation got down 3km below the seas floor!!

Global Slov comments "BTW oil is renewable-it comes from magma of the earth-do your own research. Don't tell me you believe dinosaurs & vegetation got down 3km below the seas floor!"

I had a chuckle over this because many years ago I had a job printing North Sea oil well logs and seismic charts for an oil company

I too was surprised that the wells went so deep and asked the same question of a number of experts.

The answer was always the same, the position of the oil wells did indeed reflect the position of the sea level in that region, millions of years ago.

From this I learnt just how much the land has changed over millions upon millions of years and just how slow the process of producing oil from decaying material takes

It might be nice to believe it has all been a con and that oil is a product of the Earth's Magna

The fact is however that it isn't and that all else is fantasy

Another fantasy I fear is that "renewable" resources exist that are capabable of supplying baseload power for industrial societies and that a combination of "evil energy suppliers" is repressing their use

Dream on!
